As this summer starts we have to acknowledge that the world has changed greatly since we ran our Winter Wonderland in December 2019. Spring 2020 has been a very difficult time for everyone and we have all been affected in some way. We have all felt the impact in different ways and to varying degrees and we must sadly acknowledge that things will not be back to ‘normal’ for some time. There are other challenges ahead too as the economic impact looms on the horizon. It is at times like this that we need to work together and share our common humanity even as we find ourselves adapting to new ways of socialising.
Avant-Gardening’s work is firmly rooted in the community and we have have been honoured to meet so many wonderful people and build great partnerships in the area around the pocket park. Sadly, the nature of social distancing means that we will have to reevaluate how we work with the community and our partner schools for the forseeable future.
It seems likely that there will be an increased need for ways in which people can be creative together, share their experiences and enjoy our urban green spaces. So, even though we have had to cancel our summer activities we are still planning on continuing with improvements to the pocket park to make it a great, local space for the community. We are excited to have been awarded a Cleaner, Greener, Safer award from Southwark Council and will use this to continue improving bio-diversity and finding ways to mitigate against poor air quality in the pocket park.
We are still keen to hear from members of the local community that may be interested in volunteering to help with the maintenance of the space or want to share ideas of how we can continue to develop the space and work with the community in new ways that ensure that people feel comfortable and safe.
